GRAVEL EVOLUTION

GRAVEL perfumes are the essence of a long and eventful life. Unique and charismatic like its creator, Michael B. Knudsen (b. 1911), who traveled from Europe across the ocean to the United States chasing the American Dream by creating America's first men's perfume: A Man's Cologne. Since Michael Knudsen sold his very first bottle in New York, 46th Street and Madison Avenue, he has spent decades in the American metropolis and created perfume concepts that fascinate to this day. Every GRAVEL bottle gets that "certain something" from the addition of stones from the Hudson River, which are still added to each bottle by hand today.

Michael Knudsen, founder of GRAVEL

Michael B. Knudsen, is the creator of GRAVEL New York 1957. He faced many challenges to realize his dream of creating his own perfume.

He started his first creation in the 50's. At that time, it was not foreseeable that he would develop a classic that would mark the beginning of more than 70 years of perfume history with numerous fragrances.

Each fragrance reflects its extraordinary life path. Born in Scandinavia (1911), Michael B. Knudsen embarked on the voyage across the ocean as early as the 1920s (Across the Ocean) to America. A young man who, like so many of his generation, embraced the promise of the American Dream (American Dream) he laid. It was the golden era of Hollywood and Knudsen fell for the charms of the film industry. The charismatic, handsome young man acted in several film productions and came into contact with the sophisticated world of show business. This shaped his exquisite taste, his penchant for beauty and his extravagant lifestyle. From this time came many connections with illustrious personalities and members of the social elite.

These experiences, his European roots and the resulting tension between this “classic” style and the new forces in society awakened in him the desire to transport something of this into the new era of America without denying the beginning of upheaval in the late 1950s . He felt the need for a scent that captured all of these experiences, beliefs and promises.

Driven by his vision and supported by Hazel Guggenheim, the concept of his first perfume was gradually created in New York, GRAVEL A MAN’S COLOGNE, with which he was supposed to create a monument for himself. At the time it was the first men's perfume from the USA. Until then there were actually only after shaves and the like. At this point, neither Knudsen nor Guggenheim realized how big an influence Gravel would have on his future life and on the American perfume world. He dedicated the rest of his life to the development of gravel, putting his charisma, his connections and all his energy at the service of his brand. It can be said that the entire American fragrance industry benefited from Knudsen's pioneering spirit and visionary genius.

To this day, each bottle is filled by hand and is made from gravel stones Hudson River to a unique piece. Since the first bottle in New York in 1957 46th Street was sold, Michael B. Knudsen remains unforgotten through each of his fragrances. In his over 60 years in the perfume industry, he developed numerous fragrances for women, men and, even back then, unisex fragrances.
