GRAVEL EVOLUTION
GRAVEL perfumes are the essence of a long and eventful life. Unique and charismatic like their creator, Michael B. Knudsen (born 1911), who traveled from Europe across the ocean to the USA, pursuing the American Dream by creating America's first men's fragrance: A Man's Cologne. Since selling his very first bottle in New York City at 46th Street and Madison Avenue, Michael Knudsen spent decades in the American metropolis, creating perfume concepts that continue to captivate. Every GRAVEL bottle receives its distinctive touch from the addition of stones from the Hudson River, which are still placed in each bottle by hand.
Michael Knudsen, founder of GRAVEL
Michael B. Knudsen is the creator of GRAVEL New York 1957. He faced many challenges in order to realize his dream of creating his own perfume.
He began with his first creation in the 1950s. At that time, it was not yet foreseeable that he would develop a classic that would mark the beginning of over 70 years of perfume history with numerous fragrances.
Each fragrance reflects his extraordinary life story. Born in Scandinavia (1911), Michael B. Knudsen embarked on his journey across the ocean to America in the 1920s. A young man who, like so many of his generation, succumbed to the allure of the American Dream . It was the golden age of Hollywood, and Knudsen, too, fell under the spell of the film industry. The charismatic, handsome young man acted in several film productions and came into contact with the glamorous world of show business. This shaped his refined taste, his appreciation for beauty, and his extravagant lifestyle. Many connections with illustrious figures and members of the social elite stemmed from this period.
These experiences, his European roots, and the resulting tension between this “classic” style and the new forces in society awakened in him the desire to carry something of this into the new era of America, without denying the beginning of the upheaval of the late 1950s. He felt the need for a fragrance that would capture all these experiences, convictions, and promises.
Driven by his vision and supported by Hazel Guggenheim, the concept for his first perfume, GRAVEL A MAN'S COLOGNE , gradually took shape in New York, a fragrance that would become his legacy. At the time, it was the first men's fragrance from the USA. Until then, only aftershaves and similar products existed. Neither Knudsen nor Guggenheim realized how profound an impact Gravel would have on his life and the American perfume industry. He dedicated the rest of his life to developing Gravel, pouring his charisma, connections, and all his energy into his brand. It's fair to say that the entire American fragrance industry benefited from Knudsen, his pioneering spirit, and his visionary genius.
Each bottle is still filled by hand and made unique with gravel from the Hudson River . Since the first bottle was sold on 46th Street in New York in 1957, Michael B. Knudsen has remained unforgettable through each of his fragrances. In his more than 60 years in the perfume industry, he developed numerous fragrances for women, men, and, even back then, unisex scents.
