The Dream
GRAVEL's story begins with Michael B. Knudsen – the visionary behind the brand. It's the story of a man who emigrated to the USA and realized his dream of creating his own perfume there. Born in Scandinavia in 1911, he took the leap across the ocean (ACROSS THE OCEAN) to America. A young man who succumbed to the promises of the American Dream (AMERICAN DREAM). The energy of New York City, his European roots, and the tension between both worlds formed the basis for his first fragrance: A Man's Cologne – a perfume that combines courage, hope, and the promises of New York.
Driven by his vision and supported by Hazel Guggenheim, GRAVEL A Man's Cologne was launched in 1957 as the first men's perfume in the USA.
To this day, every bottle is filled by hand and made unique by pebbles from the Hudson River.
The name
These “Gravel Stones” ultimately not only gave the brand its name but also became part of its identity. To this day, the original pebbles are found in the A Man's Cologne bottle—as a symbol of origin, memory, and authenticity.
The first bottle
Upon completing his fragrance, Knudsen intended to give the first three produced bottles to an NBC editor. By chance, he walked past F. R. Tripler's store on 46th Street, a renowned boutique in Manhattan for generations. He spontaneously decided to present his perfume there. The buyer was immediately impressed by GRAVEL and added it to their product range. This moment marked the beginning of an impressive success story. From then on, GRAVEL was only available in the most exclusive stores and achieved cult status.
The Evolution
After Knudsen's death at the age of 98, production stalled and GRAVEL faded into obscurity. Christian Blessing, a passionate GRAVEL enthusiast, experienced this firsthand. He was captivated by the complex, timeless fragrances and the brand's unique history.
Out of a desire to make these perfumes available again, the decision was made to restore GRAVEL to its former glory – as a family-run company that remains true to Knudsen's ideals and the brand's values. Today, as in the past, the fragrances are presented exclusively in selected boutiques.
A New Chapter
Since 2018, Christian Blessing has dedicated himself to the further development of GRAVEL. With a clear vision for the future, perfumes far removed from the mainstream have since been created – together with experienced perfumers and young talents. The foundation: an uncompromising pursuit of quality down to the smallest detail.
Today, GRAVEL combines traditional perfumery with modern haute parfumerie. While the iconic original compositions remain a central part of the brand, new fragrances are simultaneously being created with the same uncompromising attitude towards quality, character, and craftsmanship.
